Rare earths comprise 17 elements with very different properties and markets. They are not uniformly rare in geological terms, but separation, refining and production of marketable grades are demanding.
Applications range from permanent magnets, catalysts and polishing materials to phosphors, ceramics, lasers and special alloys. A single “rare-earth price” is therefore not meaningful.
Element, compound, purity, origin and delivery term determine value. Mining quotas, separation capacity, export policy, inventories and technology demand affect each segment differently.
